Tacoma designated hitter Jason Bates had a good game in a losing cause. His team fell, 6-4, to Nashville at Red Devils Stadium. Bates was 4 for 5 with a home run, a double, and 2 singles, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once. Jeff E. Gray picked up the win in relief, improving his record to 1-0. Jeff Kubenka was tagged with the loss. Every game is important, even these early ones, if the Sounds hope to make a postseason run.
The Sounds got a lift from catcher Mike Matheny, who in the bottom of the 11th stroked a 2-0 fastball into right for a 2-run home run. It was his 1st home run of the season and put the Sounds ahead, 6-4.
In postgame remarks, Matheny simply said: "Here's to a great win!"
