Florida Trades Blankenship for St. Louis's Jackson

Done deal! The Florida Marlins have agreed to send 34-year-old minor league 2B Lance Blankenship to the St. Louis Cardinals for 33-year-old minor league RHP Jack Armstrong and 24-year-old 2B Damian Jackson. The trade, rumored for days, was completed in the wee hours this morning.
Lifetime Blankenship has played in 1355 games with a .230 batting average. Among his 1125 hits are 338 doubles, 10 triples and 53 home runs. He also has scored 823 runs and driven in 427 runs.

Encarnacion Raises Awareness at Local Animal Shelter

Marlins left fielder and noted animal rights activist Juan Encarnacion appeared at a local animal shelter today. Encarnacion visited the shelter to help call attention to the cause of pet adoption. "These animals desperately need to be taken in by loving families," said the popular Florida player as he cradled a small puppy. "Many of these little guys were unwanted and abandoned. I just want to use my status in the community to help find good homes for them." Encarnacion, who is a member of PETA, has long been a spokesman for the organization and is a noted advocate for animal protection.
