The 1998 season did not get off to quite the start the Charlotte Knights had hoped, with an opening day loss to the Chicago Cubs at Comiskey Park. The final score was 9-5. First Baseman Don Mattingly was named player of the game for Chicago. Mike Hampton, who went 6.1 innings, was the winning pitcher. He was charged with 4 runs on 3 hits, while walking 5 and striking out 4. His record now stands at 1-0.

Rich Becker had a big 2-run home run for the Cubs in the top of the second inning. With Chicago leading 2-0 and a runner on 1st, he got a curveball from Ron Robinson and stroked the home run to right. It was his 1st home run of the season, and more importantly, it put the Cubs ahead, 4-0.

"I had some good swings out there," said Mattingly.
