Cubs Trip Creams, 2-1
|
Chicago Cubs starter LaTroy Hawkins turned in an exceptional performance against the Milwaukee Creams at Wrigley Field, resulting in a Chicago win, 2-1. Reliever Mike Stanton picked up the win. His record improves to 1-2. Phil Leftwich took the loss. Alberto Reyes converted his 16th save in 19 tries.
With scoring opportunities rare, the Cubs had to cash in when they had the chance. One such opportunity presented itself in the bottom of the fourth, when first baseman Don Mattingly hit a run-scoring single. The single came off Phil Leftwich and made the score 1-0, Cubs. Mattingly went 2-3 with a home run, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once.
"The effort we put into this one paid off," Mattingly said.
The Creams, now 38-46, have lost 8 straight.
