Mets Subdue Detroit, 3-1
In a low-scoring clash between New York and Detroit, pitcher Takehiro Ishii was a difference-maker. The right-hander earned player of the game honors for New York in the 3-1 win. Todd Jones was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 9 of 10 save opportunities. The Mets have an impressive 52-32 record.

It could have been a different outcome for New York, had it not been for Gary Sheffield, the 1995 Most Valuable Player winner . Sheffield contributed a run-scoring double in the top of the fifth inning to put New York up, 2-0.

"You score one run, you're not going to win," said Detroit skipper Julio Izquierdo. "You can have three Koufaxes and three Drysdales, you're still not going to win."
