Dodgers Lose to Athletics, 6-4
|
The Oakland Athletics downed the Los Angeles Dodgers, 6-4, at Dodger Stadium. The Athletics were led by Gene Kingsale, who captured player of the game honors. He went 2 for 3 with a double and a walk, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once. William VanLandingham got the win, improving to 3-6. He worked 6 innings, giving up 4 runs on 6 hits, while striking out 3 and walking 2. Jason Bere notched his 12th save in 12 chances.
A defensive lapse proved costly in the contest. In the top of the sixth, with the game tied, Billy Ripken was at the plate when Oakland scored 1 on an error. The miscue enabled the Athletics to go in front, 5-4.
In postgame comments to the Oakland Gazette, Ripken said, "If the effort is there, the wins will come."
The last-place Athletics improved to 36-55.
