Cardinals Hold Off Royals, 5-4
|
The St. Louis Cardinals turned back the Kansas City Royals, 5-4, at Busch Stadium. Brian S Giles was named player of the game for his fine performance. He went 2-3 with a double and a walk. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. Allan Anderson got the win, improving to 1-0. He worked 6.1 innings, giving up 4 runs on 6 hits, while striking out 4 and walking 3. Steve Chitren recorded his 1st save for St. Louis.
One of the stars of the game was St. Louis catcher Jorge Posada. In the bottom of the fifth with two out, he got a changeup from Rick Reed and hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 5-4 in favor of the Cardinals.
"I'm just looking for a good pitch that I can hit well," said Giles. "And not try to do too much."
Every game is important, even these early ones, if the Cardinals hope to make a postseason run.
