Late Rally by Marlins Secures Win
|
The Marlins had to overcome a fine performance from St. Louis pitcher Mark Portugal to grab a 5-2 win at Busch Stadium. Portugal allowed 2 earned runs over 6 innings. Bryan Harvey notched his 21st save in 25 chances. Florida improves to 65-36 with the win. They lead their division by 5½ games.
Florida used the bat of Richie Sexson to get the win. The first baseman hammered a 2-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to put the Marlins ahead, 4-2. It was his lone hit in 4 at-bats, but it did its damage.
"We cashed in when we had the chance," said Florida manager Stephen Ginter.
