Big Day for Lawton as Reds Down Creams, 5-2
|
The Cincinnati Reds beat the Milwaukee Creams, 5-2, at Riverfront Stadium. Matt Lawton was recognized as player of the game for his performance. He went 3 for 4 with a home run, a double, and a walk. He scored 3 times and drove in 2. The 26-year old right fielder was a menace to Milwaukee all day. Jim Abbott got the win, improving to 4-3. He pitched 8.2 innings, giving up 8 hits and 2 runs, while striking out 10 and walking 3. Arthur Rhodes was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 22 of 28 save opportunities.
In the top of the ninth, Chipper Jones stood in the box, looking for a pitch to hammer. The Creams were trailing 5-2, but had the bases loaded. That's when Arthur Rhodes made a terrific pitch and Jones grounded out. Gone was the dream of a Milwaukee comeback.
With the victory, the Reds record now stands at 60-44.
