Spiders Score Late, Upend Reds, 5-3
|
The Cleveland Spiders beat the Cincinnati Reds, 5-3, at Riverfront Stadium. The win was largely due to the efforts of third baseman Kevin Mitchell, who captured player of the game honors. He went 2 for 3 with a home run, a double, and a walk. He scored 2 times and drove in 2. Jose Jimenez was the winner. Over 7 innings, he allowed 2 runs on 6 hits, with 2 walks and 3 strikeouts. Dennys Reyes earned his 10th save in 11 chances.
Mitchell had a game-changing home run in the top of the eighth. On a 1-2 curveball from Jim Abbott, he banged a 2-run home run to left, giving the Spiders a 4-2 lead. It was the 29th home run of the year for Mitchell.
"If it's down the middle," said Mitchell, "you might as well hit it."
With the win, the Spiders have a record of 41-69.
