Fine Effort by Becker Not Enough in 12-9 Cubs Loss
The Chicago Cubs got a superb performance from left fielder Rich Becker. Still, it wasn't enough to beat Cleveland. The Spiders won the game, 12-9. In spite of the loss, Becker was named the player of the game. He went 3 for 4 with a home run, 2 doubles, and a walk, while adding 5 RBI and scoring once. Dennys Reyes converted his 12th save in 14 tries. The 5th-place Spiders now have a win-loss record of 43-76.

Cleveland used the timely hitting of Howard Johnson to capture the win. The first baseman stroked a bases-clearing double in the top of the fourth inning to put the Spiders on top, 5-3. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but he made it count.

Johnson told a Cleveland Today reporter that he was "satisfied" with the win.
