St. Louis Cardinals starter Mark Portugal turned in a sterling performance against the Chicago Cubs, leading his team to a slim 3-2 win. St. Louis reliever Francisco Cordova picked up the win to move to 8-1. Alberto Reyes suffered the loss. Steve Chitren got the save, his 21st in 25 chances.

St. Louis used the clutch hitting of Placido Polanco to capture the win. The third baseman drilled a 2-run double in the top of the ninth inning to give the Cardinals the lead, 3-2. For the game, Polanco had 1 single and 1 double in 4 at-bats.

"Throwing strikes was the main thing," Portugal said.

Chicago has now lost 4 in a row.
