Red Sox Win in Extras
|
Crowds lined up early in front of League Park, eagerly awaiting the start of the 1998 Doubleday Baseball League season. On the mound was Tom Gordon for the visiting Boston Red Sox and John Thomson for the hometown Cleveland Spiders. In a spirited contest, the Red Sox pulled out the win, defeating the Spiders by the score of 4-3. Earning player of the game honors was Trey Moore. Boston reliever Roberto Hernandez picked up the win, bumping his record to 1-0. Trey Moore was collared with the loss.
Tied up with the Spiders in the top of the 11th inning, the Red Sox got a boost from second baseman Akira Eto. With the bases empty, Eto saw a 1-1 changeup from Trey Moore and hit a solo home run to break the stalemate and put Boston on top, 4-3.
"What a great win for our team," said a jubilant Brett Williams, the Boston manager.
