Phillies Squelch Cardinals Offense in Shutout Win
In a tight game between the Philadelphia Phillies and the St. Louis Cardinals, pitcher Chris Carpenter was terrific on the mound. The Philadelphia right-hander was named the player of the game in Philadelphia's 3-0 win. The winning pitcher was Carpenter, now 2-2. He tossed 6 innings of 3-hit ball, while walking 3 and fanning 9. German Jimenez picked up the save for Philadelphia, his 2nd of the year.

The Phillies got a big at-bat from first baseman Derrek Lee. For the game, Lee went 1-3 with a home run and a walk. He drove in 3 runs and scored once. In the bottom of the first, with runners on 1st and 3rd, he stroked a 3-run home run. His 5th home run of the season gave Philadelphia a 3-0 lead.

"I'm just happy to help the team win," Carpenter told the Philadelphia Observer.

The Cardinals fall to 9-12 and continue their lethargic start to the 1998 season.
