Bates Lifts Rainiers to 10-5 Win
The Tacoma Rainiers defeated the Portland Stag, 10-5, at Tuttle Fields. Tacoma designated hitter Jason Bates was named player of the game for his superb performance. He was 3-4 with a home run, 2 doubles, and a walk, while scoring 4 times and driving in 3. Tacoma reliever Mike Mohler was the winner. His record is now 1-1. Jonathan Johnson took the loss. Jeff Kubenka earned the save for Tacoma, his 1st.

Ricky Otero had a nice at-bat for the Rainiers with two out in the top of the eighth. With runners on 2nd and 3rd, the center fielder hit a run-scoring single, which would prove important in the Tacoma win.

Bates said his wife shared good advice with him before the game. "She said, 'Don't allow this game to make you mad.' When I thought about it, I realized this is just a game. I was able to relax at the plate."

Tacoma, now 6-4, has gotten their season off to a good start.
