Brantley Fashions Shutout Against Suns
Wednesday, June 3rd, 1998
Bluff City Beasties pitcher Cliff Brantley did his job to perfection today, blanking the Jacksonville Suns at Field of the Running Rebels. He scattered 4 hits while striking out 6 in the 2-0 shutout.

"All I did was not allow any runs," he joked after the game. "I mean, technically, that's what they pay me to do, right?"

In 13 starts this season Brantley has fashioned a 6-3 record and a 3.86 ERA.

Tarantulas Chill Brown's Hot Streak
Tuesday, June 2nd, 1998
Salt Lake City right fielder Emil Brown came into today's game against the Tucson Tarantulas on a hot streak. He left on a cold one.

The Tarantulas did their jobs well, beating the Salt Lake City Buzz 7-1 and holding Brown hitless to snap his 23-game hitting streak. The 23-year-old right fielder had a few words to say after finishing 0-for-4, telling reporters only that he "came up short."

"What Emil did was exciting and quite an achievement," said Buzz manager . "It's tough enough to get one hit in this league, much less go 23 games in a row. I'm even more proud of the way he handled the press coverage. He never let the frenzy get to him or affect his play."

This season Brown is batting .350 with 8 home runs. His totals include 36 RBIs and 41 runs scored.
Smith Shines in Gem
Tuesday, June 2nd, 1998
Pete J. Smith of the Nashville Sounds spun his magic on the Spokane River Rats today. He blanked them 6-0 on 6 hits, registering 7 strikeouts and 1 walk.

"The bottom line was I just kept the ball down," Smith said. "My breaking stuff was down. Everything was down."

Talking to reporters in the postgame interview, Nashville skipper said the team "got solid pitching, good defense and took great team at-bats in a lot of different situations."

"Pete J. pitched really well but this was a solid performance by everyone," he said.

On the year Smith has worked 88.1 innings with 69 strikeouts en route to a 7-6 record and 3.87 ERA.
