Fans got some free baseball at Busch Stadium.
The Kansas City Royals managed to get by the St. Louis Cardinals, 5-4, at Busch Stadium. Kansas City first baseman Jim Thome took player of the game honors. Rod Beck picked up the win in relief, improving his record to 1-0. Steve Chitren was tagged with the loss. John Habyan got credit for the save for Kansas City. It was his 1st of the year.
Late-game drama came in the top of the tenth inning. With no one out and the bases empty, the batter, Quilvio Veras, hit a single. It helped Kansas City seize the win.
"There's no quit in this team," said Royals manager Daniel Drucker.
The Cardinals fall to 10-14 and continue their lethargic start to the 1998 season.
