Leyritz Slugs Brass to 9-1 Win
Riding the 4-hit performance of the 34-year old catcher Jim Leyritz, the New Orleans Brass stopped the Tacoma Rainiers, 9-1. Steve Cooke, the winner, improved to 10-3. He held the Rainiers to 1 earned run on 5 hits over 7 innings, while striking out 9 and walking 0. At 56-39, New Orleans is in second place in the Pacific Central.

The result might have been different for New Orleans, had it not been for Eric Chavez. The shortstop produced a run-scoring single in the top of the fifth inning to put the Brass ahead, 2-1. For the game, Chavez had 1 double and 1 single in 4 at-bats.

"We were able to get some things going offensively," said Chavez.
