Victory Pushes Diamondbacks Record to 15-10
|
Spirited fans at Jack Murphy Stadium greeted the San Diego Padres for their clash with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The San Diego Padres got a superb performance from pitcher Andy Ashby, but the Arizona Diamondbacks still won the game, 5-2. Ashby was named the player of the game despite the loss. He threw 8 innings allowing 3 runs. Arizona reliever Mike Harkey picked up the win, upping his record to 2-2. Andy Ashby shouldered the loss. Danny Patterson earned the save, his 6th, for the Diamondbacks.
Arizona used the bat of Delino DeShields to get the win. The second baseman hammered a 3-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to put the Diamondbacks ahead, 3-1. It was his lone hit in 4 at-bats, but it did its damage.
DeShields called the win "a collective effort."
The Padres drop to 12-13 and continue their inconsistent start to the 1998 season.
