The Detroit Tigers picked up a win at Shea Stadium, knocking off the New York Mets, 4-2. On the mound for Detroit was right-hander Kerry Wood, who played a pivotal role in the win. Wood, now 1-2, was the winner. In 7.2 innings, he gave up 4 hits, while striking out 10, walking 1, and allowing 1 earned run. The save went to Brad Clontz, his 6th this season.

Detroit second baseman Wil Cordero had a nice game. In the top of the fifth inning with one out, he belted a solo home run for the Tigers. It made the score 3-1, Detroit. For the game, Cordero was 3-4 with a home run and 2 doubles, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once.

"At the end of the day, it's always about your starting pitcher," said Detroit skipper Julio Izquierdo.

Every game is important, even these early ones, if the Tigers hope to make a postseason run.
