Padres Lose to Mets, 7-5
|
The New York Mets topped the San Diego Padres by the score of 7-5, with the largest share of the credit going to left fielder Cliff Floyd. Floyd went 2-4 with a home run, a double, and a walk. He scored 2 times for the Mets. Jason Isringhausen got the win, improving to 2-3. He held the Padres to 5 earned runs on 2 hits over 6.1 innings, while striking out 3 and walking 5. The save was Mike Sirotka's, his 1st.
The Mets benefited from an error in the top of the seventh inning. New York was tied 5-5 when Bret Boone hit a run-scoring single that was misplayed. It put New York in front, 6-5.
"One win at a time, one game at a time. We try not to get too far ahead of ourselves," Boone told the New York Gazette.
The Padres fall to 14-16 and continue their wobbly start to the 1998 season.
