Devil Rays Clip Cardinals in Tight Contest
The Orlando Devil Rays faced a tough opponent in St. Louis pitcher Mark Portugal, but did just enough to pull out the victory at Orlando Citrus Bowl by a final score of 8-3. Portugal went 7 innings and allowed 2 earned runs. Reliever Xavier Hernandez picked up the win. His record improves to 2-0. Mariano Rivera took the loss. The Cardinals fall to 13-18 and continue their uneven start to the 1998 season.

There were several reasons the Devil Rays beat the Cardinals, but one factor was Jose Valentin. In the bottom of the eighth, the Orlando third baseman came to bat and hit a run-scoring single. It staked his team to a 4-3 lead.

Valentin called the win the result of "everyone being in sync."
