Cincinnati rode a fine outing from starter Derek Lowe to victory over the Chicago Cubs at Riverfront Stadium. The final score was 5-2. Brian Shouse picked up the win in relief, improving his record to 2-0. Mike Hampton was tagged with the loss. The Cubs fall to 12-19 and continue to sputter in the early going.

Jay Payton, the Cincinnati center fielder, contributed a run-scoring double in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the score 3-2, Reds. For the game, Payton went 1-3 with a double and a walk.

"Nothing fazes Derek," said Cincinnati manager John Frey.
