Late Rally by Cardinals Secures Win
The Cardinals had to overcome a fine effort from Orlando pitcher John Smoltz to grab a narrow 4-3 win at Orlando Citrus Bowl. Smoltz went 8 innings and allowed 2 earned runs. St. Louis reliever Randy Myers picked up the win, upping his record to 1-3. Alan Embree was saddled with the loss. The Devil Rays fall to 13-18 and continue to sputter in the early going.

The Cardinals took the lead in the top of the ninth. With no one out, Preston Wilson hit a 2-run home run off Orlando pitcher Alan Embree, putting St. Louis in front, 4-3. For the game, Wilson went 2 for 4 with 2 home runs, while adding 3 RBI and scoring twice.

"If you ever get this game figured out," said Orlando manager Ben Tennyson, "let me know."
