Cardinals Stay Hot, Beat Cubs
|
In a low-scoring affair between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs, pitcher Dan Wilson was the difference between victory and defeat. The St. Louis right-hander earned player of the game honors in the 3-1 Cardinals win. Mark Portugal went 7 innings for St. Louis to pick up the win. The right-hander was charged with 1 earned run. He scattered 8 hits, while walking 1 and striking out 4. His record improves to 1-0. Steve Chitren was credited with the save for St. Louis, his 4th of the season.
Wilson's nice game included a clutch 2-run home run in the bottom of the seventh.
Wilson expressed little emotion after the game. "Every game we win now," he said, "is one less win we'll need to get in the end."
The winning streak has now reached 5 games for the Cardinals.
