The New York Mets got a superb performance from pitcher Takehiro Ishii, but the Montreal Expos still won the game, 6-5. Ishii was named the player of the game despite the loss. He threw 7 innings of 3-hit ball. Montreal is now riding a 7-game win streak.

The game was at a stalemate until pinch hitter Mike Sweeney came to bat in the bottom of the ninth. Facing New York pitcher Mike Sirotka, he hit a 0-2 slider for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Montreal on top, 6-5.

Sweeney told a Montreal Daily reporter that he was "satisfied" with the win.
