Cincinnati beat Cleveland at Riverfront Stadium, eking out a 2-1 win. The win was due in large part to pitcher Greg Mathews, who earned player of the game honors. Arthur Rhodes finished the game for Cincinnati and earned his 8th save. The Reds now own a record of 22-18.

Bernie Williams, who is a five-time Gold Glove winner, chipped in for Cincinnati with a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh. For the game, the left fielder had 2 hits in 4 at-bats with 1 home run, 1 single, 1 run scored, and 1 run batted in.
