Spiders Come Up Short at Cincinnati
The Cincinnati Reds did just enough to sneak past the Cleveland Spiders, 5-4, at Riverfront Stadium. Cincinnati pitcher Mike Mussina earned player of the game honors. Mussina went 8 innings to notch the win. He scattered 4 hits, walked 4, and struck out 9. His record improves to 6-3. Cincinnati is now 23-18.

Scott Spiezio, who was drafted in the 2nd round of the 1995 draft, aided the Cincinnati cause with a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third. For the game, the first baseman drew 1 walk.

"Mike was throwing strikes, locating well," said Cincinnati manager John Frey.
