The Washington Senators got a superb performance from pitcher John Burkett, but the New York Mets still won the game, 1-0. Burkett was named the player of the game despite the loss. He threw 9 innings of 5-hit ball. Jason Isringhausen got the win, improving to 3-4. He pitched 6.1 innings, giving up 1 hits and no runs, while striking out 4 and walking 4. The Mets bumped their record to 21-20 with this latest triumph.

The result might have been different for New York, had it not been for Bret Boone. The second baseman produced a run-scoring single in the top of the seventh inning to put the Mets ahead, 1-0. For the game, Boone had 1 double and 1 single in 3 at-bats.
