The St. Louis Cardinals got a sterling performance from pitcher Scott Erickson, but the Red Sox still prevailed, 8-2. Erickson was named the player of the game in a losing cause. He threw 7 innings of 3-hit ball. Roberto Hernandez earned save number 2. Boston, at 4-1, has sizzled in the early going.
Boston needed the clutch hitting of Todd Greene to notch the win. The catcher hammered a 3-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to put the Red Sox on top, 4-1. For the game, Greene had 1 home run and 1 single in 4 at-bats.
St. Louis manager Adam Rabel said his team was "out of sync."
