Reds Nip Cardinals, 5-4
St. Louis got a terrific performance from first baseman Brian S Giles, but it wasn't enough to beat the Cincinnati Reds. Cincinnati won the Riverfront Stadium contest, 5-4. Giles was the player of the game despite being on the losing side. He went 2 for 3 with a home run and a triple. He scored 2 times and drove in 2. Joey Hamilton was the winner. Over 7 innings, he allowed 4 runs on 9 hits, with 1 walk and 8 strikeouts. Earning his 10th save for Cincinnati was Arthur Rhodes.

The Reds got a big at-bat from left fielder Bernie Williams. For the game, Williams went 1 for 4 with a home run. He drove in 3 runs and scored once. In the bottom of the fourth, with a runner on 1st, he stroked a 2-run home run. His 7th home run of the season gave Cincinnati a 4-3 lead.

"We'll enjoy this win," said Williams. "But there's more we hope to accomplish."

The Reds, now 30-20, know that wins in May count the same as wins in September.
