Late Rally by Spiders Secures Win
|
Behind the bravura of left fielder Raul Ibanez, the Cleveland Spiders topped the Kansas City Royals by the score of 7-4. Ibanez went 2-3 with a home run, a double, and was hit by a pitch, while scoring 3 times and driving in 2 for the Spiders. The winner was John Thomson, who threw 125 pitches over 7 innings. The right-hander was charged with 4 runs on 11 hits. Steve Karsay, credited with the save, is now 9 for 13 in save opportunities.
Had Kevin Mitchell not delivered a key base hit in the top of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 2nd, Mitchell hit a 3-run home run. That made the score 7-4, in favor of the Spiders.
"One win at a time, one game at a time. We try not to get too far ahead of ourselves," Ibanez told the Cleveland Today.
Cleveland goes to 23-39, Kansas City to 40-24.
