Florida rode a decent outing from starter Kevin Appier to victory over the Charlotte Knights at Joe Robbie Stadium. The final score was 4-2. The winner was Paul Byrd in relief. His record improves to 1-0. Steve Shirley took the loss. Florida leads the Federal League East Division by 2 games.

Florida first baseman Richie Sexson laid a blow when he belted a 2-run home run in the bottom of the ninth. It was his 24th home run of the season. With it, the Marlins took a 4-2 lead.

"That's how to finish a ballgame," said Sexson.
