With shortstop Gary Sheffield leading the charge, the New York Mets defeated the Las Vegas Angels, 7-6, at Shea Stadium. Sheffield, who led the UL in OPS with .966 in 1989, went 2 for 4 with 2 doubles. He drove in 3 runs and scored once. Darren Holmes saved it for New York. New York, at 5-1, has sizzled in the early going.

With New York leading 5-3 in the bottom of the seventh, Sheffield hit a 2-run double off Las Vegas hurler Matt Clement. It was the 3rd double of the season for Sheffield and put his team ahead, 7-3.

"We'll enjoy this win," said Sheffield. "But there's more we hope to accomplish."
