Twins Edge Cardinals, 6-5
|
The Minnesota Twins beat the St. Louis Cardinals, 6-5, at Busch Stadium. The Twins got a fine performance from second baseman Brent Gates, who captured player of the game honors. He was 4 for 4 with 2 doubles and 2 singles, while scoring 2 runs. Reliever Rob Dibble picked up the win. His record improves to 5-2. Mariano Rivera took the loss. Minnesota goes to 38-42, St. Louis to 40-41.
Gates had a game-changing double in the top of the eighth. On a 0-2 fastball from Mariano Rivera, he banged a run-scoring double to right, giving the Twins a 6-5 lead. It was the 24th double of the year for Gates.
"We took advantage of our opportunities," Gates told the Minnesota Daily. "It's as simple as that."
