Guerrero Bangs Out 5 Base Hits
Thursday, July 2nd, 1998
Vladimir Guerrero knows as well as anyone that in baseball, the biggest contracts go to the biggest hitters. At Bank One Ballpark today, he made his case to be considered among that group.
The 23-year-old right fielder hammered 5 hits in 7 chances, though the remarkable effort came even as his Las Vegas Angels fell, 5-4, to the Arizona Diamondbacks.
"We made some bad pitches and he took advantage of it," Diamondbacks manager Alen Maglajac told BNN sportswriters after the game. "Thankfully, we were able to do enough elsewhere that Guerrero wasn't the difference."
Vladimir Guerrero flied out in the 2nd, doubled in the 3rd, walked in the 5th, hit an RBI double in the 7th, singled in the 9th, singled in the 12th, doubled in the 14th and grounded out in the 15th.
Guerrero is hitting .290 this season with 17 home runs, 62 RBIs and 46 runs scored. He has 98 hits in 338 at-bats.
