Cirillo and Mercker Suspended for Free-for-All
Sunday, July 5th, 1998
If there wasn't a history between Jeff Cirillo of Washington and Kent Mercker of Baltimore, then there is one now. The incident between the two sparked a bench-clearing scrum with those two being the center of attention. Now they will miss 4 and 8 games respectively as a result of their actions. The league office announced their suspensions today.
"We're both really competitive," Cirillo said later, "and sometimes things go a little too far because of it."
Thus far this season Cirillo has hit .189 with 6 home runs, 25 RBIs and scored 26 times.
Mercker has taken the mound for no relief appearances this season, nailing down no saves while notching a 2-11 record with a 6.06 ERA. The Baltimore reliever has limited opposing batters to a .254 batting average.
