The Boston Red Sox overcame a good performance by Charlotte left fielder Barry Bonds to knock off Charlotte, 8-4, at Fenway Park. Bonds was 3-5 with a home run and 2 singles, while scoring 3 times. The win was credited to Roger McDowell in relief. His record improves to 4-0. John Smiley took the loss. Boston now owns a record of 36-64.

The Red Sox got a big at-bat from catcher Raul Casanova. For the game, Casanova went 2 for 4 with 2 doubles. He drove in 3 runs and scored once. In the bottom of the third, with runners on 1st and 2nd, he stroked a 2-run double. His 7th double of the season gave Boston a 3-2 lead.

"We put it together today and came out with the win," Casanova said in postgame remarks. "That's the main thing."
