Padres Need Extra Frames to Get Past Expos
|
The San Diego Padres had to overcome a big game from Montreal catcher Mike Sweeney to leave Jack Murphy Stadium with a 9-8 victory. Sweeney slugged 2 home runs. He drove in 5 runs and scored twice. San Diego reliever Mike Henneman picked up the win, upping his record to 6-3. Jim Corsi was saddled with the loss. The win puts the Padres at 63-53, while the Expos drop to 71-45.
The game was at a stalemate until center fielder Jim Edmonds came to bat in the bottom of the 11th. Facing Montreal pitcher Dave Leiper, he hit a 1-0 sinker for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting San Diego on top, 9-8.
"The boys were really swinging the bats today," winning manager Matt Dodds said.
