O'Neill Excels, But Whalers Win
Despite a fine performance by left fielder Paul O'Neill, the Bluff City Beasties suffered a 6-4 loss to the Hartford Whalers. O'Neill slugged 2 home runs, while adding 3 RBI and scoring twice. The save was credited to Paul Byrd, his 1st. The win takes Hartford to 1-1.

Mark DeRosa went 2-5 with a double, while scoring 2 times and driving in 2 for Hartford. With one out and the game tied in the top of the ninth inning, DeRosa, who was drafted in the 2nd round of the 1997 draft, had a clutch at-bat. Facing Bluff City hurler Ramon Pena, he hit a run-scoring double to give the Whalers a 5-4 lead.

"I'm just happy to help the team win," DeRosa told the Hartford Daily.
