Whalers Win at Asheville, 10-7
|
The Hartford Whalers grabbed a 10-7 win over the Asheville Moonshiners at Torrance Grounds. Hartford first baseman Felipe Crespo was 2 for 4 with a double and a walk, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 2 to earn player of the game honors. Robert Person, the winner, improved to 1-0. He held the Moonshiners to 6 earned runs on 6 hits over 5 innings, while striking out 5 and walking 2. The Moonshiners drop to 4-6 and continue their inconsistent start to the 1998 season.
Hartford used the timely hitting of Keith Osik to seize the win. The catcher stroked a 2-run single in the top of the third inning to put the Whalers on top, 5-2. It was his only hit in 5 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
"We'll put this win in our pocket and go after the next one," said Crespo.
