Conditions were not ideal but Spokane and Portland were able to put their game in the books.

The Spokane River Rats defeated the Portland Stag, 3-1, in Pacific action at Tuttle Fields, with Spokane pitcher Rick Helling named player of the game. Portland is still trying to get off the schneid, having lost 8 in a row.

Mike Lowell was vital part of the Spokane win. He was 1 for 5 with a double. In the top of the fourth with two out, Lowell hit a run-scoring double. It made the score 3-1, in favor of the River Rats.

"At the end of the day, it's always about your starting pitcher," said Spokane skipper .
