The Cleveland Spiders defeated the Boston Red Sox, 9-6, in Federal League action at League Park. Kevin Mitchell received player of the game honors. The 15-year veteran belted 2 home runs. He drove in 3 runs and scored twice. The Red Sox drop to 12-12 and continue their inconsistent start to the 1998 season.

In the bottom of the third inning, Cleveland got a break when Mitchell went to the plate. With two outs, a runner on 1st and the Spiders trailing 3-1, Mitchell hit a 2-run home run.

Mitchell said his wife shared good advice with him before the game. "She said, 'Don't allow this game to make you mad.' When I thought about it, I realized this is just a game. I was able to relax at the plate."
