Both teams had their chances, but the Portland Stag eventually prevailed at Ballpark of Louisville.

Portland left-hander Scott Karl made an effective start against the Tucson Tarantulas at Ballpark of Louisville, leading his team to a 5-4 win. In 7 innings, Karl surrendered 5 hits, while striking out 4 and walking 4. He allowed 3 runs. Vic Darensbourg notched his 23rd save in 28 chances.

Had Mike Metcalfe not delivered a key base hit in the top of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and the bases loaded, Metcalfe hit a 2-run single. That made the score 5-3, in favor of the Stag.

"Both teams played hard," said Portland manager .
