Red Sox Stymie Philadelphia, Take 5-1 Win
John Ericks never let the Phillies get in a groove. The right-hander used his bread and butter, his curveball, to pitch the Red Sox to a 5-1 win. Ericks, now 4-4, was the winner. In 6.1 innings, he gave up 2 hits, while striking out 6, walking 3, and allowing 1 earned run. Even with the win, the Red Sox have a dismal 23-44 record.

It could have been a different outcome for Boston, had it not been for Oddibe McDowell, the 35-year old center fielder . McDowell contributed a run-scoring single in the top of the third inning to put Boston up, 1-0.

"John was pounding the zone," said Boston manager Brett Williams.
